The artist of this painting, Dong Yuan (c. 934 – c. 962) was known for both figure and landscape paintings, and exemplified the elegant style which would become the standard for brush painting in China for the next nine centuries. He is considered to be one of the most influential Chinese painters of all time, and Xiao and Xiang Rivers to be his revolutionary masterpiece, which in many ways formed the development of Chinese art throughout the years.
